Lord Krishna was born on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, and this day is known as Janmashtami and it is celebrated with great joy every year. This year it will be celebrated on 6th and 7th September. Janmashtami is observed on both small and large scale. People decorate their homes beautifully and perform numerous rituals.
People of all ages actively participate in the festivities on the auspicious day of the sacred tithi of Janmashtami. The children dress up as Lord Krishna and are very excited to participate in the community-organized plays based on Lord Krishna’s life. Whereas the elders spend the entire day fasting and arranging the puja. They also prepare prasad for the puja, and once the puja is completed, they break their fast with the prasad and sweets offered to Lord Krishna.
Missionary charities such as ISKCON organise programmes all over the world where thousands of people gather to chant, pray, and celebrate all day. On this day, a popular sport known as Matkiphor or Dahi Handi is played primarily in Maharashtra, in which an earthen pot or matki is tied high from the ground and a group forms a human pyramid to hit the matki filled with curd.
Festivals like these are way of bringing people together so that they celebrate it with happiness. It also spreads peace and harmony amongst all.
