About Virendranath Chatopadhyay
Virendranath Chattopadhyay, popularly known as Chatto (1880–1937), was an Indian revolutionary and elder brother of Sarojini Naidu. Born in Hyderabad, he went to England in 1902 to study law but soon became active in nationalist politics, joining the India House circle in London. Later, he played a crucial role in forming the Berlin Committee during World War I, seeking German support to free India from British rule. A strong internationalist, he built links with revolutionaries across Europe and later moved to Moscow, where he engaged with the Communist International and supported global anti-colonial struggles. Despite his tireless efforts for India’s freedom, he met a tragic end during Stalin’s Great Purge in 1937. Remembered as a bold and passionate freedom fighter, Chatto’s legacy highlights the global dimension of India’s independence movement.
