Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) – Honoring the Heroes of India
On January 30, India observes Martyrs’ Day (Shaheed Diwas) to honor the sacrifices of freedom fighters and commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, was assassinated on this day in 1948 at Birla House, New Delhi, by Nathuram Godse.
Gandhi’s principles of non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satyagraha), and freedom (Swaraj) inspired India’s fight for independence from British rule. His life remains a beacon of peace and justice worldwide.
The nation pays homage to Gandhi at his memorial, Raj Ghat, in Delhi. Dignitaries, including the President, Prime Minister, and military chiefs, participate in ceremonies to honor his legacy. A two-minute silence is observed at 11:00 AM across the country.
Martyrs’ Day reminds us of the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and inspires us to uphold Gandhi’s ideals of truth and non-violence in our lives.
