World Humitarian Day: 19th August
About World Humanitarian Day:
World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on August 19, honoring the courage and selfless dedication of humanitarian workers worldwide and commemorating the tragic 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which claimed the lives of Sérgio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues. Established in 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly, the day serves both to raise awareness about global humanitarian efforts and to advocate for the safety and recognition of those who risk—and sometimes lose—their lives while helping others. In 2025, the theme is “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities,” underscoring the importance of supporting crisis-affected populations not just as recipients, but as partners shaping their own futures
