Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Bhadrapada, which usually falls in August or September.

Lord Krishna is considered the symbol of love, compassion, and dharma (righteousness). The festival holds great spiritual importance, as his birth is believed to have taken place to protect dharma and destroy evil. Devotees observe the day with fasting, devotional songs, dance, and enactments of Krishna’s childhood stories, known as Raslila and Dahi Handi.

At midnight, which is believed to be the exact time of Krishna’s birth, temples and homes are decorated beautifully, bells ring, and prayers are offered with great devotion. From Mathura and Vrindavan to other parts of India and the world, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with immense joy, symbolizing faith, love, and the victory of good over evil.
