World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2025

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year on June 17. It was established by the United Nations in 1994, following the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

Purpose of the Day:

The day aims to:

  • Raise awareness about the presence and risks of desertification and drought.
  • Promote international cooperation to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought.
  • Highlight the importance of land restoration, sustainable land management, and resilience building in vulnerable communities.

What Is Desertification?

Desertification is land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities. It leads to the loss of productivity of land, threatening food security and livelihoods.

What Is Drought?

Drought is a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water. It affects agriculture, ecosystems, water supply, and human health.
