Madanlal Dhingra – A Brave Revolutionary

  • Birth: February 18, 1883, in Amritsar, Punjab
  • Education: In 1906, he went to England for higher studies.
  • Role in Freedom Struggle: While in London, he came in contact with revolutionary organizations like India House, led by Shyamji Krishna Varma and others. Inspired by their ideals, he dedicated himself to India’s independence.
  • Major Incident: On July 1, 1909, Madanlal Dhingra assassinated British officer Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie in London. This act was a symbolic protest against British rule and one of the earliest revolutionary activities carried out on foreign soil for India’s freedom.
  • Martyrdom: On August 17, 1909, he was executed by hanging in London.

His Legacy

Madanlal Dhingra’s fearless sacrifice ignited a new spirit of courage among Indian youth. Before his execution, he proudly declared:
“I believe that a nation held in bondage with foreign rulers is in a perpetual state of war. I have tried to strike down one of the enemies of my country, and I am proud to lay down my life for the cause of my motherland.”

He remains an eternal symbol of patriotism and sacrifice in India’s freedom movement
