Birsa Munda, a tribal freedom fighter and religious leader, was born on November 15, 1875 in Ulihatu, district Khunti, Jharkhand. In British India, the area was known as Bihar. His parents were Sugana Munda, an agricultural labourer and Karmi Hatu. He belonged to the Munda tribe. He grew up in Chalkad.

He began a movement to reform Munda society. He stood up to the British, the missionaries, the moneylenders, the traders, and the Hindu landlords.

He was arrested on March 3, 1900. He was arrested while sleeping with his tribal guerrilla army in Chakradharpur Jamkopai forest. On June 9, 1900 at the age of 25, he died in Ranchi Jail.
