International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day: 8th August

About International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on 8th September across the world. It was declared by UNESCO in 1966 to highlight the importance of literacy as a basic human right and a foundation for lifelong learning. The day aims to remind the international community that literacy is not only about reading and writing, but also about dignity, empowerment, and sustainable development. Despite global progress, millions of people, especially women and children in developing countries, still lack basic literacy skills. Every year, a special theme is chosen to promote awareness and action towards literacy challenges. On this day, governments, NGOs, schools, and communities organize seminars, workshops, and awareness campaigns to encourage education for all. International Literacy Day serves as a reminder that education is the key to equality and social progress, and literacy is the first step towards building a better future.
