Bal Gangadhar Tilak, born on July 23, 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, was a brilliant scholar, teacher, and lawyer who later became one of the most respected leaders of India’s freedom struggle. Popularly known as Lokmanya”, meaning “accepted by the people as their leader,” Tilak was known for his sharp intellect and strong moral convictions. His early education and exposure to Indian culture shaped his nationalist ideals, which would later inspire millions of Indians.

Role in the Freedom Movement


Tilak played a key role in transforming the freedom struggle from a limited political activity into a mass movement. He firmly believed that Swaraj was the birthright of every Indian, and he worked tirelessly to awaken the masses. Through his newspapers Kesari (Marathi) and The Mahratta (English), he openly criticized British rule, encouraged unity among Indians, and motivated the youth to join the cause. His powerful slogan,स्वराज मेरा जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार है, और मैं इसे लेकर रहूँगा” became a rallying cry for the independence movement.

Cultural Revival and Social Work

Apart from politics, Tilak was deeply committed to reviving India’s cultural pride. He started public celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi and Shiv Jayanti to bring people together socially and politically. As part of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio (Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Bipin Chandra Pal), he championed a more assertive approach within the Indian National Congress. He also made lasting contributions to education by co-founding the Deccan Education Society and Fergusson College in Pune, nurturing a new generation of educated and patriotic Indians

Death and Legacy

Bal Gangadhar Tilak passed away on August 1, 1920 in Mumbai, but his ideas and courage continue to inspire India. Known as one of the earliest and strongest voices against British imperialism, Tilak’s legacy is celebrated every year on his death anniversary. Across the nation, people remember his life, read his writings, and draw strength from his message of unity, self-reliance, and unwavering patriotism. His vision laid a strong foundation for the eventual independence of India.
