He is renowned for his work in the field of education, and played an important role in the Indian independence movement. He is also well-known for his contributions to Hinduism and Indian culture. His great ancestors were well-known for their Sanskrit scholarship called the Malwa, which is why he is also known as the Malaviya.

He is also remembered for his work in promoting education in India. He worked in society on many important fields, trying to eradicate caste barriers in temples and other social barriers. This led to him being expelled by the Shri Goud Brahmin, who accused him of working against the caste system. He organized the entry of Hindu Dalit into the Kalaram Temple on the Rath Yatra day and took a dip in the Godavari River by chanting Hindu mantras. After suffering from ill-health for several years, he passed away on 12 November 1946.
