Every year on August 29, India celebrates National Sports Day. The day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand and to spread awareness regarding sports.

On this day, sporting heroes are honoured with multiple awards such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dhyan Chand Award, and Dronacharya Award.
