India celebrates Martyrs’ Day or Shahid Diwas on 30th January each year. Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, during an evening prayer at the Birla House. Therefore, on January 30, Martyrs’ Day is celebrated by the State to commemorate the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s death.
On this day, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and three service chiefs (Army, Air Force, and Navy) dedicated a wreath of multicolored flowers to his Samadhi in Raj Ghat, Delhi. At 11:00 am, a two-minute silent prayer in memory of Indian martyrs is observed nationwide.
