The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil conflict, took place between May and July 1999 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district. The war represents a military conflict between India and Pakistan.

The Kargil War was divided into three major phases. First, Pakistan captured various strategic high points in the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir. Second, India retaliated by seizing strategic transportation routes and, finally, by militarily pushing Pakistani forces back across the Line of Control.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated annually on July 26 to commemorate the sacrifices made by soldiers during the Kargil War. Without a doubt, the war is an example of high altitude warfare in mountainous terrain, posing significant logistical challenges for the opposing forces. The Indian Army launched ‘Operation Vijay’ in 1999 to retake Indian territories from Pakistani intruders in the Kargil-Drass sector. ‘Operation Vijay,’ an Indian Army mission, was a complete success for India.
