Bankim Chandra Chatterjee or Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was a nationalist writer from West Bengal.

He was born on 27th June, 1838 in Naihatti, Bengal Presidency, British India (now West Bengal, India). He was a poet, journalist and novelist. In Bengali, he is also known as the Emperor of Literature. His father was Jadav Chandra Chattopadhyaya. His mother was Durgadevi Chattopadhyaya.

His early education was at Hoogly Mohsin College. He was a student at the Presidency College. He holds the distinction of being one of the first few people to graduate from Calcutta University.

He wrote poems, novels and essays. His iconic song Vande Mataram will forever remain as treasure for India.He died in Kolkata on April 8, 1894.
